What is it about Nobel Prize Winners?
Jul 19th
Oscar Arias, the mediator in the American-backed negotiations between the current government of Honduras and the ousted President, Zeleya, announced Friday that he was optimistic about reaching a brokered deal between the two sides. Arias is the President of Costa Rica, and a former Nobel Prize recipient.
What is it about Nobel Prize winners? Arias’s latest proposal included several points that had been previously refused by both sides in the Honduran struggle. He includes them in his latest proposal and was optimistic about the sides agreeing to it?
Arias’s latest proposal called for Zeleya’s return to power for the rest of his term (elections are slated to take place in November), the creation of a Unity Government with all parties represented and amnesty for all crimes.
The interim government, under Micheletti, has always insisted that Zeleya’s return to power was out of the question. They contend (rightfully so, if you read the Honduran Constitution) that Zeleya was removed from power in a valid manner for attempting to retain power after his term expired. This amounts to an act of treason under the Honduran Constitution. Zelaya was removed from power after the Attorney General went the Honduran Supreme Court and obtained and Arrest warrant for treason and abuse of power. The Supreme Court directed the military to arrest Zeleya. In Honduras, the military is responsible for enforcing the Constitution.
And this line in the Reuters’ story is just priceless:
The coup triggered the worst political crisis in Central America since the end of the Cold War and poses a challenge for President Barack Obama as he tries to improve U.S. relations with Latin America.
Well, maybe there wouldn’t be a crisis if Obama and the rest of the world leaders had bothered to determine the legitimacy of Zeleya’s removal from power before calling it a “coup” and applying sanctions on the country.
The last thing a legitimate government wants is the return of a leader ousted for valid reasons, simply because the rest of the world leaders are too idiotic to understand the ouster was made in keeping with the Country’s Constitution, and instead listen to the spin coming from leftists like Hugo Chavez.
And the current Government of Honduras is legitimate. Zeleya was removed from power in the manner set out by the Honduran Constitution and his replacement, Micheletti, was the man next in line to be President. The only thing that occured that was not in keeping with Honduran law was Zeleya being forced out of the country.
